During the Transitional Period, we see a steady improvement in the armour used to protect the torso. Early body armour often consisted of small metal plates fastened to various garments. The number and arrangement of the plates varied widely throughout the period and, as the metallurgy of the age improved, fewer and larger plates were used. By the end of the century, the solid breast-plate is introduced.

Coat of Plates
18 gauge mild steel and leather
The coat of plates was a common form of rigid body armour during the Transitional Period. Fashioned from several overlapping plates of steel riveted to the inside of a leather garment, it was worn over a maille shirt and provided excellent protection. The design seen here is a later-period coat based on an archeological find made in the mass graves of Visby, Gotland. |

Gorget - Fencing Style
16 gauge mild steel
A design based on the "classic" 17th century gorget, this style of armour protects the throat and neck form thrusts and stabbing attacks. Although the gorget was not used during the medieval period, this armour has been adopted by the WMA community for safety reasons. |

Splint Gorget
18 gauge mild steel and leather
Completed in September, 2004. This gorget features a padded liner which is a common hockey neck protector. The two pieces attach together with a series of snaps. The splinted gorget itself features its own closure strap and can be worn as a stand-alone piece of armour. The steel plates are 18 gauge mild steel and provide extra protection as well as a more historical look to the gorget. |

Gorget - Simple Style
16 gauge mild steel
This gorget is a modern design that is widely used by the SCA and other LARP groups. It has a "medieval" look and is engineered to protect the throat and neck from blunt force trauma. |

Gorget - with Leather Skirt
16 gauge mild steel and leather
A variation of the "simple" gorget design, this piece features a leather skirt. The leather skirt allows the gorget to be fitted under the neckline of a maille shirt or other body armour to allow for greater protection and more comfort. |
